Move Maker Spotlight: Lanasa Clarkson

Unity. Change. Inclusiveness. A few words that Junior Lanasa Clarkson works towards daily. If it isn't from her daily work in the political science department, to her impactful events with Black Student Union she daily makes moves for all students to be more comfortable on the campus of The College of Charleston. Check out the interview and learn more about this firecracker.

1. What is your major/ field of study and how do you feel that has an impact on your influence on campus?

I am a Political Science and African American Studies double major with a concentration in Politics, Philosophy, and Law. Being an African American Studies major has played a vital role in my influence on campus. By taking classes within the department I have grown not only as a student, but as a leader as well. I am able to use the knowledge learned within the classroom and facilitate this amongst the general population.

2. What inspired you to become a member of BSU?

Being that I'm an African American woman on a predominately white campus I felt as if it was necessary to seek out an organization like BSU. This organization gives students of color a safe space to have these open dialogues regarding racial issues not just on our campus, but on campuses around the nation.

3. What impact do you look forward to having not only on minority students at CofC, but the whole campus community?

The impact that I envision Black Student Union having on the campus community is to promote a sense of purpose for students of color.

4. What advice would you give any female student that is interested in becoming a leader on campus?

Just go for it! Nothing can stop you but yourself, so move forward with positivity and purpose.

5. Any events we should be on the lookout for?

Absolutely! Black Student Union's 2nd Annual Kid's Carnival is scheduled for October 28th. We also have some very special events planned for the month of February!
