Black Boy Joy Spotlight : Malik Wright

My name is Malik. I am currently a Junior at College of Charleston and an Arts Management major. I am a Charleston native born and raised. The person that I am, and the "Black Boy Joy" that everyone sees is because of the way I was raised. I was taught to never let anyone steal your spotlight, not only the spotlight everyone else sees, but also the spotlight you see within yourself. That's why I smile so much. Also, smiling is a contagious.

I enjoy writing poetry and making/listening to music. I believe music brings joy to the soul. Honestly, I haven't been involving myself in many activities on campus until I gained interest in the music field at College of Charleston. I am intrigued to find out what else this campus has to offer me, so I'm glad I was selected for the 'Black Boy Joy' spotlight for Collegiate Curls. I really like what Collegiate Curls is doing in their attempt to bring this campus closer together. It's amazing.

My words of encouragement for those men of color out there is to always remember your potential and how important we are in shaping this world.

Many people fail to realize the accomplishments of your ancestors and the accomplishments of today's generation of black men. We are important in this society too. I will not let anyone make me feel otherwise, so neither should you.
