When I think of Collegiate Curls, I think about the empowerment of people of color in a nutshell. The everlasting impact Collegiate Curls is making in the lives of others is noteworthy. For me, it is an embracement of my uniqueness. When I was younger, I was ashamed of my curls, multicultural background and freckles. This organization allowed me to show others what I have learned throughout the years and helped me learn things about myself that I did not know. Collegiate Curls is a lifestyle, not just an organization.

Collegiate Curls shines a vivid and positive light on the diverse depletions and indescribable beauty of the black community. Therefore, I say unhesitantly, organizations like these keep me grounded, grounded within myself; constantly reminding me " young black woman, be bold and change that for no one." I am able to comfortably become, continuing to create myself each and every day; while enhancing my ability to unapologetically love all of myself. I am reminded that in a head wrap, even with afro as big as those of lions or in a shortest of boy cuts; I am and forever will be beautiful.

I am Morgan B. Jackson, a Theatre majoring student at the College of Charleston. I am a resident of Columbia, South Carolina where I graduated from Blythewood High School. I am honored and pleased to be the Social Media Analyst for such a distinguished organization like Collegiate Curls. Collegiate Curls is a pedestal for diverse students and we pride ourselves in not limiting our efforts to what could be mistaken as just “haircare,” but rather the holistic wellness of all partakers. Being that this institute has a solid foundation, we will continue to enhance the student’s experience for years to come.

What does collegiate curls mean to me?

To me collegiate curls means to embrace natural beauty and to encourage self confidence in yourself in the classroom and beyond.
