There is quite a strong presence of creativity here at the University of Kentucky. However, there are a select few whose creative energy is felt from the moment they step foot in a room. Rhyan Moss is one of them.

Although a Louisville native, UK was not in Rhyan's plan to begin with. A former football player, Moss came in as a transfer student and opted to take a semester off to really get a feel for how he wanted to shape his future. After weighing his options, Rhyan decided UK was the next best option to finish school and attain his degree. He is happy with his decision and we believe he made the right choice!
Now, as a junior working toward his bachelor's degree in Integrated Strategic Communication on the Creative path, Mr. Moss is wasting no time establishing himself as a brand and a businessman. We got the chance to catch up with Rhyan about how he continues to shape his own personal brand and his apparel: FlyGuyDenim

CC: How would you describe your style?
Mr. Moss: I feel like I’m all over the place when it comes to my style. If I put it on and feel like it’s good for the day I’m rolling with it. I like to keep things simple with statement pieces and a wide color palette. I think a good fit should flow well from top to bottom, never matching but always coordinating. If you feel good, you look good!
When did you decide to start FlyGuyDenim and what inspired you to do so?
My currently short lived creativity started in the summer of 2016. This was the same time I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. My whole life I’ve watched my brother be creative in every way imaginable, from painting murals to portraits to street, even studio photography. He was my inspiration before I knew he was my inspiration.
So one day that summer I came up with a design for a pair of jeans I thought would look cool. I asked my brother if he could make them for me and he told me “No.” Now with our comical relationship I thought he was joking and I assumed he was actually going to get it done for me, but he was serious. He told me if I wanted something made right then make it myself.
I’ll never forget that day nor that conversation, it lead to me buying a sewing machine and teaching myself how to sew. Everything else is history. I’m fully self-taught, which doesn’t always pair well with being a perfectionist, but nonetheless the journey has treated me well and I expect the same from the future.

Rhyan Moss's first piece
What was the first piece you created and why?
The same piece piece I just mentioned was the first thing I ever made. A pair of biker jeans I did patchwork and deconstruct/reconstruct on. That piece will always be near and dear to my heart because, in a way it showed me that I had the talent to create my vision with my own hands.
Which pieces do you enjoy making most?
I enjoy the reconstruction of denim, taking a piece and fully making it your own. I typically like working on jean pants more than jackets, but it’s all fun to me. My last piece is always my favorite until I start the next.
What are your long term goals for yourself as a creative and for FlyGuyDenim?
FlyGuyDenim is just a branch of what I do, specifically focused on denim pieces. I hope it continues to flourish especially with my love for denim in general. But for myself as a creative, I hope to one day be the Creative Director for a major fashion house. I love working on clothes but my creativity reaches far beyond fabric and I hope to show the world that someday.

What would you like to see from Collegiate Curls this year?
If you even vaguely know me, you know I have all the love in the world for natural hair. I was genuinely excited to see Collegiate Curls on our campus. I just want to y’all have fun and inform people on all the lovely types of curls and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
You have to tell us what you use on your dreads...
Taliah Waajid Black Earth Products. The locking gel works great in my dreads, it’s not too heavy and doesn’t build up much residue at all. When drying it’s not flaky and holds good moisture.
