Kentucky Connect: Meet Ayanna Wright!

Young entrepreneurs are hard to come by on the University of Kentucky's campus. Those that push to reach their career goals so early are truly commendable for their commitment to their studies, extra curricular activities, and to their own personal success. Ms. Ayanna Wright is the perfect example of just that.

Ayanna Wright is currently a Senior here at the University of Kentucky, pursuing a degree in Business Management while double minoring in Communications and Creative Writing. Having moved from Chattanooga to Louisville at the age of 11, Ms. Wright decided on UK after touring in high school with the notion that she wanted to stay in-state, but stray far enough away from home to gain some independence. The resources that have been made available to her and the information she has been exposed to since coming to UK prove her right in her decision to attend.

As busy as she may be, Ms. Wright has found the time to build a business of her own: Wright Label Hair Co.

CC: Describe the mission of Wright Label Hair Co.?

Ms. Wright: Wright Label Hair Co.’s mission is to provide great quality affordable hair that is accessible.

What inspired you to start the company?

They say be the change you want to see, right? Being a college student, I couldn’t drop $300-400 dollars on quality hair but, I also did not want to settle on Beauty Supply Store pack hair. Beauty Supply Stores here in Lexington are also far away, so I took it upon myself to provide my peers with the experience of having great quality hair at reasonable prices at their fingertips.

How did you go about putting your business plan in action?

It’s been a long time coming. I’ve dreamt of having my own hair line since my sophomore year of college. After coming up with I plan I started marketing myself and my brand. I put money from birthdays and the holidays to the side to invest back into my business. Thank God for my grandmother. I told her my business plan and she made a generous donation on top of what I already saved to help me get started. Since then, I have sold out my initial inventory and I am working towards expanding my brand.

What are your long term goals for Wright Label Hair Co.?

Long-term I would like for Wright Label Hair Co. to become a well renowned company that impacts the community positively by providing jobs and affordable bundles to people around the world.

How has Wright Label Hair Co. impacted your life as a young entrepreneur so far?

Starting my own business has taught me discipline and patience. A lot of people initially think that when you start a business, the profit just rolls in. You don’t start to see sufficient profit until about 2-3 years into the business. But, don’t let that discourage you from starting your own. Throughout this journey, I have had to be very patient and understanding with myself. To all the young entrepreneurs out there, you must continue working hard and just trust the process. Your time is coming.

What would you like to see from Collegiate Curls in the upcoming semester?

I would love to see more Collegiate Curls Chapters at more Universities. UK Collegiate Curls has done an excellent job getting their name out and recruiting members to the organization. I would like to them host more programs and continue to market themselves around campus. I surely support them and will continue to work with them next semester.

We have to know your favorite hair products...

  1. My first favorite product is a Deep Treatment from a small business named Curly Coily Tresses. Angela, who is the owner, has done a wonderful job creating high performance, clean, minimal-ingredient products that are carefully curated, cruelty-free, ageless and genderless in formulation. Each of her 3 products are fragrance-free, contain minimally processed oils and butters, and are COMPLETELY organic! After using this deep treatment for several months now my curls are POPPING like never before due to all of the moisture this product provides. Follow her on IG, @cucotress and click the link in the bio to order from her website!

  2. My second favorite product is Aphogee’s 2-Step Protein Treatment. I’ve suffered from heat damage and like most naturals assumed that I had to cut all of my hair off to gain my curls back. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until I cut all my curls off that I realized protein treatments can help reverse damage. Now I may have had to cut some pieces off still, but it wouldn’t have been a big chop. I’ve used this product once every three months since this summer and have seen AMAZING results. I usually get the little 2-pack from my beauty supply store for 3$, but I just saw the bundle deal on Amazon for $11.83.

  3. Aunt Jackie’s Knot on My Watch – I first stumbled across this product as a sample in my local beauty supply store. I an out of leave in and the sample was the only thing I had so I used it. BEST DECISION EVER! The slip this product provides is A1. **Though it does provide a good amount of moisture I would not substitute it for a leave in conditioner.
