During the Winter months, it can be a struggle to fall into a routine with your natural hair. Cold winds, snow, and rain affect the state of your hair no matter your hair type. As dry as this season tends to be, there are options for keeping your hair and scalp as moisturized as possible and protected from the elements surrounding it.

1. Protective Styles
Whether you prefer wigs, sew-ins, box braids, or even rocking your natural hair, each of these options offer a protective style for the winter. Complete covering your hair with a wig or a sew-in are great options to hide your hair from the elements, as long as you remember to moisturize your natural hair beneath. Protective styles for wearing your natural hair out may include braids, buns, twists, and more!
2. Moisturizing products
During the winter season, deep conditioning is a necessity! The dryness of the cold air is extremely high and it’s necessary to put more moisture back into your hair than usual. Developing a once a week deep conditioning routine would make all the difference!
3. Avoid heat
Back in the day, when the weather got cold, a lot of us thought it was the perfect time to pull out the flat iron and straighten your hair. While it may last longer in winter weather, heat is still one of the worst things you can put on your curls, so don’t be tempted!
4. Be careful of your winter accessories
Normally we wear knitted hats and scarves during the winter, not thinking about how these accessories affect our hair. It’s best to invest in hats that have a satin lining to avoid breakage, also scarves that have smooth material that won’t cause friction in your hair.

Protecting your hair from the elements is vital to encourage growth. Remembering some of these tips and tricks, your natural hair should still be able to flourish no matter how intense the Winter weather in your area gets!
