‘Art-ish was an art appreciation event on February 25, 2019 by Collegiate Curls of Winthrop in collaboration with NAACP, A.Bevy, Hip Hop Matters Club, and DJ Chizzy. The event featured live painting, photography, music, on-campus artists, Winthrop alumni, performances, food, a picture booth, and various ways to collaborate and make your own artwork. ‘Art-ish allowed all attendees to enjoy themselves while meeting new people and celebrating art.
‘Art-ish had tables set up for attendees to pick up canvases or mugs to create their own art pieces. Also, there were tables set up for students Daisha Finley, Antonio Washington, Joshua Wiley-English, and Shayvone Harvin to display and sell their own artwork. Harvin, a junior biology major, discussed the importance of an art event for the Winthrop community. “Events like this give awareness of the talents we have on Winthrop’s campus. You walk in and never believe the people you walk past every day would have that much talent. It gives inspiration to other people to just get out there and paint more, to draw more, to sing, to do poetry more or just to give them courage and confidence to do what they see other people doing.”
‘Art-ish also featured three Winthrop University alumni: A live painting was done by DeVon Ford. Corey Hill also known as DJ Chizzy presented live music at the event. Nia Anthony. Students also performed various pieces, whether it be songs or dances, at the event. Performers included: LJ Williams, Justin Williams, Cameron Adams, Niageria Bey, Jameel Creech, A’Vionne Richardson, and Donovan Granville. Sophomores Ryen Cohen and Daisha Finley also photographed the entire event.
Tiffany Owens, a member of A.Bevy, spoke about her experience at ‘Art-ish. “‘Art-ish was an amazing display of just some of the amazing talent we have here on campus. Seeing everyone come together to create and support one another is something we definitely need to see more of. Although it started a little late, it was well worth the wait! The food was great, the performances were amazing, and the entire vibe was fun. All the groups who came together to make it possible did an amazing job. I can’t wait for the next one.”
‘Art-ish was a great way to collaborate with alumni, other organizations, students, the Winthrop community, and artists from all mediums. What a great way to end Black History Month!
